INTRODUCTION TO 1 Timothy
-
The apostle Paul the Apostle wrote this letter to Timothy, his younger coworker in ministry, who was serving the church in Ephesus. It was likely written c. A.D. 62–64, after Paul’s release from his first imprisonment in Rome (Acts 28). The letter offers pastoral instruction on church leadership, sound doctrine, and godly living.

False teaching and disorder were unsettling the church in Ephesus, drawing attention away from the gospel and leading to confusion in both belief and practice (1:3–7). Paul wrote to Timothy to confront these issues and to bring clarity, structure, and stability to the church. He outlines God’s design for sound doctrine, faithful leadership, and ordered worship, emphasizing the role of elders and deacons in guiding the church. As God’s household, the church is called to be a firm foundation of truth (3:15), marked by godliness, integrity, and lives that reflect the gospel, forming an unshaken family of faith.

c. A.D. 62–64
Paul wrote 1 Timothy to his disciple Timothy while he was ministering in Ephesus, likely after his first Roman imprisonment. Timothy had been left there to address false teaching and to help bring order and stability to the church (1:3). As the gospel spread through Paul’s missionary journeys, churches like Ephesus needed clear instruction on leadership, doctrine, and daily life, and this letter provides a framework for building a healthy, enduring church grounded in truth.
